It was fantastic to hear yesterday that the Screen WM co-financed feature film Special People had won Best Film at the Moscow Disabilty Film Festival. The debut feature film from award-winning production company 104 films and local director Justin Edgar has already won Best Film at the 2008 Britspotting Film Festival in Berlin, and continues to receive great reviews.
I know from when I met up with Justin that this has been a real heart and soul film for him, 'heart art' if you like so it is wonderful to see it receiving international acclaim. I watched X-Factor at the weekend and contestants were trying to rely on the fact they were still grieving a dead wife or were a single mother of two in order to get enough public sympathy love to see them through to the next round, whereas Special People is a talented film made by a talented cast and crew and deserves the awards and acclaim it is receiving.
The film opens next week and you can see it at the Electric Cinema in Birmingham from Monday night (www.theelectric.co.uk/) as well as Warwick Arts Centre on the 3rd / 4th December (www.warwickartscentre.co.uk/events/id/3789)
